SPECIAL OPERATIONS FORCES
Special Operations Forces (SOF) face diverse mission challenges, requiring the completion of complex covert tasks, including underwater reconnaissance and target infiltration. The advanced capabilities of the FUSION hybrid ROV were developed to support operators by providing highly accurate navigation, high-resolution scanning and side scan sonars, and enhanced real-time image enhancing capabilities for operations in low to zero visibility environments.
HOW IS THE FUSION USED BY SOF?
FUSION provides tactical advantages to SOF operators through the integrated precision USBL navigation system and high-resolution sonar imagery collection capability, the resultant data package is a force multiplier. Repeatable pinpoint location accuracy is imperative for rapid target acquisition and re-acquisition to limit personnel exposure.
NAVIGATION
FUSION’s tightly integrated sensor suite provides unparalleled navigation accuracy for operators and divers alike. Real-time vehicle position is provided by an USBL, and broader situational awareness data is provided by imaging and side scan sonars. Proprietary SRS Nadir gap removal technology is only available on the FUSION ROV. This enhanced system capability improves data quality and reduces operational costs.
TARGET LOCATION
The FUSION was conceived as a tool for target acquisition, identification, re-acquisition, and intervention of assorted items, from a safe distance by Special Operations Forces around the world. The mission driven design required all sensors be integrated to the maximum extent, and to ensure output reports provide actionable intervention intelligence based on target identification confirmation.
COVERT MISSION SUPPORT
Covert operations are a fundamental requirement for SOF operators worldwide, and SRS focused our system specifications to meet this design goal. FUSION configured with a fiber optic tether can be operated up to 2 kilometers away from the surface support vessel and pilot.
DIVER SUPPORT SYSTEM
Equipped with Blueprint Subsea’s cutting-edge Oculus Multi-Beam Imaging Sonar and optional Side Scan Sonar payload, the FUSION surpasses all other vehicles in providing unparalleled support for all operators. Packaged in a lightweight expeditionary footprint, the system attributes allow for single operator deployment, use, and recovery evolution. Future system flexibility is designed into the system expansion port and tools led interface capability.
AUV MODE
FUSION is a Hybrid underwater vehicle that can operate in ROV, AUV or DDV modes. Other ROV systems, with similar tethered functionality do not have the option to operate as an AUV. The AUV mode is critical when prioritizing the subsurface safety of personnel and planning for hazardous activities where tether entanglement is a risk.
BATTERY POWERED FOR DEPLOYMENT ANYWHERE
The FUSION operates on rechargeable lithium batteries, providing a flexible deployment option compared to older, conventional, and surface powered ROV Systems with bulky, large diameter tethers that greatly degrade vehicle operational functionality and data collection quality. FUSION’s remarkable innovative battery powered design allows the use of a minimal 2.7mm diameter single-mode fiber optic tether, thus yielding minimal drag through the water column and proving operators with AUV quality date in real-time.
This small tether ensures the spooler that manages the tether is also small. The footprint of the FUSION, spooler, and controller allow for the entire system to be shipped as luggage. Without the need for a generator for FUSION operations affords operators greater footprint availability – which is critical for covert operations.
Strategic Robotic Systems now also offers a Nickel-Metal Hydride vehicle battery power option for ease of rapid deployment in the event commercial civilian aircraft travel is required.
KEY BENEFITS OF FUSION TO SOF:
- Critical support ROV for SOF operators and divers.
- Reduces in-water ‘bottom-time’ which greatly enhancing diving safety and efficiency for all subsurface intervention operations.
- Rapid ability to locate both hard and soft contacts,
- Sensors integrated together through our software – eliminating need for multiple third-party software platforms to review collected data and system information.
- Easy, rapid deployment in all weather conditions.
